Empowering Communities. People. Learners. Transforming Lives
TajiZuri works with learners in public primary schools, teachers, and caregivers in rural Kenya to remove barriers to education, promote health and wellbeing, and build resilient communities.
Organization Overview
TajiZuri is a charitable organization working to improve the education, health and wellbeing of community members through innovative, human-centered programs. Our programs are designed to expand access to education for children in the hard-to-reach rural areas of Kenya, while empowering caregivers and teachers with essential life skills and economic knowledge that strengthen health, education and wellbeing at the household level. Our approach is holistic integrating the knowledge and participation of learners, teachers and caregivers. By bringing these groups together, we aim to promote positive behavior change and inspire shifts in attitudes and mindsets within communities.
Through our work, we serve as a catalyst to Empower, Motivate, and Inspire communities.
Who We Are
At TajiZuri, we believe education is the foundation of thriving rural communities. We’re a Kenya-based nonprofit working at the intersection of learning, resilience, and sustainable development. Rather than just removing barriers to education, we rebuild the ecosystem around it.
By nurturing a growth mindset, sparking meaningful behavior change, and empowering teachers, caregivers, and learners, we help rural communities:
- Eliminate barriers to consistent, quality education
- Reimagine learning to re-engage students, educators, and families
- Unlock economic potential by equipping caregivers and teachers with skills that drive long-term resilience
TajiZuri works collaboratively with local public primary schools, caregivers, community leaders, fulltime staff, interns and volunteers to ensure contextual relevance and long-term sustainability. Strategic partnerships with corporate and institutional actors have strengthened program delivery and expanded impact.
The organization is driven by a youthful, passionate team and guided by the principle that sustainable transformation begins at the grassroots level.
TajiZuri exists to prove that when communities lead their own development, the impact lasts generations.
The Challenge
Africa is facing high school dropouts and low retention
In rural Kenya, especially in Homa Bay County, free primary education opened school doors, but it didn’t guarantee children would stay. Thousands still drop out, not from lack of potential, but because the ecosystem around them isn’t built to sustain learning.
Beyond the classroom, learners face hidden barriers:
- Economic pressures that pull children into labor, fishing, or early marriage
- Overstretched teachers & outdated methods that fail to keep classrooms engaged
- Caregivers without tools or confidence to support learning at home
- Cultural norms & long distances that quietly steer vulnerable learners away
When children leave school early, communities lose more than students. They lose the foundation for economic resilience, health, and generational progress. TajiZuri steps in where the system falls short partnering with teachers, caregivers, and learners to mitigate and eliminate these barriers, rebuild engagement, and create an environment where education actually sticks and communities thrive
Our Pillars
Every TajiZuri initiative is built on three interconnected pillars. Together, they address the root causes of school dropout and create the resilient, self-sustaining communities rural Kenya needs.
EDUCATION
Quality learning shouldn’t end at the classroom door. We equip teachers with engaging, learner-centered methods, support caregivers to reinforce education at home, and remove hidden barriers so children stay enrolled, re-engage with learning, and build the growth mindset needed to thrive.
HEALTH, NUTRITION & WELLBEING
A child who is hungry, unwell, or stressed cannot learn. We partner with families and schools to build practical nutrition habits, improve student wellbeing, and create the physical and mental foundation that drives consistent attendance, cognitive development, and long-term resilience.
ADVOCACY & COMMUNITY SYSTEM STRENGTHENING
Lasting change doesn’t come from outside,it grows from within. We work alongside teachers, caregivers, local leaders, and youth to co-create solutions, share ownership, and build a culture of collective action that outlasts any single program to ensure the learner grows in an environment that enables them to thrive in school and at home.
These pillars don’t work in isolation. They reinforce each other to create an ecosystem where education sticks, families thrive, and communities lead their own progress.
Our Support Partners
Lasting change doesn’t happen in isolation. TajiZuri works hand-in-hand with the Government (Ministry of Education , Homabay County), public primary schools, caregivers, community leaders, youths and local volunteers to ensure every initiative is culturally grounded, contextually relevant, and built for long-term sustainability.
We amplify this community-driven foundation through strategic partnerships with corporate, institutional, and impact-focused organizations. Together, we’re turning localized support into scalable, systemic change.

I love the work that TajiZuri is doing. Their approach to education by offering wrap-around support to learners – from mentorship, caregiver engagement, to life skills training for learners, teachers, and caregivers – is quite unique and effective in helping young people from rural and marginalized communities in Kenya access affordable quality and equitable education.
